IMPORTANT NOTICE

Federal and state regulations require that meritorious scholarships must be considered in the overall determination of need for all students who have any form of federal or state financial aid.  The 1992 Reauthorized Higher Education Amendment changes resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of students who are eligible to receive financial aid.  Therefore, an increasing number of students may be affected by this requirement.  If receipt of a departmental scholarship will result in a reduction in a student's financial aid package, the loan portion of the aid package is reduced first.  When necessary, work study certification is reduced or eliminated and, finally, federal and state grants may be reduced.  Many students are able to provide documentation of legitimate special circumstances allowing an increase to the student's budget and/or a reduction to the family's contribution.  This scenario may allow for the receipt of the full value of the scholarship without affecting existing financial aid.  Students are encouraged to pursue this option by completing the Financial Aid Revision Request Form which is available upon request from either the Office of Scholarship Services or the Office of Student Financial Aid at WSU.
